Hatfield's #hatfield history traces back to the farm Koedoespoort (named after the kudu herds in the area), which was allocated to Lourens Cornelius Bronkhorst in 1859 during the early Boer settlement period . This was part of the broader Pretoria area, which itself was founded in 1855 by Marthinus Wessels Pretorius . In 1885, an heir to Bronkhorst sold Koedoespoort to the Wesleyan Methodist Society, which intended to use it for missionary and educational purposes . During the Second Anglo-Boer War (1899–1902), the property served as a hospital camp for British forces under Methodist administration . Establishment as a Suburb After the war, in 1903, the Wesleyan Methodist Society sold a portion of the land to Patrick Duncan, who was the Colonial Secretary of the Transvaal at the time .
