Hatfield Pretoria - Scott Cochrane Hatfield Property Guy

 Hatfield's #hatfield history traces back to the farm Koedoespoort (named after the kudu herds in the area), which was allocated to Lourens Cornelius Bronkhorst in 1859 during the early Boer settlement period . This was part of the broader Pretoria area, which itself was founded in 1855 by Marthinus Wessels Pretorius .

In 1885, an heir to Bronkhorst sold Koedoespoort to the Wesleyan Methodist Society, which intended to use it for missionary and educational purposes . During the Second Anglo-Boer War (1899–1902), the property served as a hospital camp for British forces under Methodist administration .

Establishment as a Suburb

After the war, in 1903, the Wesleyan Methodist Society sold a portion of the land to Patrick Duncan, who was the Colonial Secretary of the Transvaal at the time . Duncan oversaw the transformation of this land into a residential suburb.

The suburb was officially proclaimed in 1905 (though some sources say 1903) and named "Hatfield" after Hatfield House, an estate in Hertfordshire, England belonging to William Palmer, 2nd Earl of Selborne, who became Governor of the Transvaal in 1905 . The town layout was designed by W.R. Lanham in 1905, dividing the 240-morgen site into residential plots .

Duncan Road, one of the main thoroughfares, was named after Patrick Duncan . Other streets were named after prominent figures of the time, including Burnett Street (after Reverend Amos Burnet, the second Wesleyan Reverend in Pretoria) and Grosvenor Street (after Lady Elizabeth Grosvenor, mother of Arthur Lawley) .

20th Century Development

•  1910: The University of Pretoria was established nearby, with its Hatfield campus demarcated in 1910 . This would profoundly shape the suburb's future character.

•  1916: Hatfield was incorporated into Pretoria .

•  Mid-1930s: The suburb became fully residential .

•  1932: The Hatfield Bakery opened, becoming the first commercial business in the area, founded by Sakkie Andrews .

The area developed slowly at first due to its location on the eastern outskirts of Pretoria, maintaining an "elegant, stately and quiet character" with large family homes built under jacaranda trees .

Post-War and Modern Transformation

Following World War II, Hatfield's growth accelerated alongside the expansion of the University of Pretoria. The university experienced rapid development in the late 1940s and 1950s, influencing the suburb's demographic evolution .

A major transformation occurred from the late 1980s onward. Between 1990 and 2000, numerous office blocks and retail buildings were constructed, shifting Hatfield toward a mixed-use, student-oriented environment . By the early 2000s, only about 18% of the surface area remained residential .

Recent Developments

•  2011: The Gautrain commuter rail system became fully operational, with the Hatfield station located within the suburb .

•  2014: The A Re Yeng rapid bus transit system opened .

•  2019: The Javett Art Centre opened at the University of Pretoria .

Today, Hatfield is a vibrant, high-density suburb characterized by student accommodation, embassies, government departments, historic buildings, and commercial developments. According to the 2011 census, it spans 1.97 square kilometers with a population of approximately 9,274 residents , though more recent estimates suggest around 15,000 people . The suburb maintains its historic parks, including Springbok Park (formerly Grosvenor Square, conceived in 1905 and declared a National Monument in 1979) , Richard Street Park, and Belgrave Square .
